Adult Partial Hospital Programs

Our short-term, intensive day treatment programs help adults who are struggling with mental health challenges to stabilize mood and improve functioning. Contact us today to learn how our programs can support you or a loved one.

McLean’s Adult Partial Hospital Programs offer short-term, intensive, day treatment for adults, ages 18 and up, who may be struggling with a wide range of mental health conditions.

With care options in Belmont and Middleborough, our highly structured programs are ideal for people who are in crisis, but can still safely reside in the community. Many individuals attend day programs after an inpatient psychiatric hospital stay or to prevent further worsening of symptoms that could require hospitalization.

About the Programs

Each partial hospital program aims to help patients stabilize mood, improve functioning, and support a return to outpatient treatment. Our expert teams combine proven, effective treatment models with person-centered care to support individuals on the path toward recovery.

The Behavioral Health Partial Hospital Program, located on McLean’s Belmont campus, treats people struggling with mood and anxiety disorders, depression, personality disorders, bipolar spectrum disorders, and thought disorders. The approximate length of participation is three weeks (15 consecutive business days). The program is available in person only and operates Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 3pm.

The McLean SouthEast Adult Psychiatric Partial Hospital Program, located on the McLean SouthEast Isaac Street campus in Middleborough, is ideal for people struggling with depression and anxiety disorders, with or without other co-occurring mental health conditions. Average participation is between 5 and 10 days. Patients can choose to attend the program virtually or in person, however, remote patients must reside in Massachusetts. The program operates Monday through Friday from 9am to 3pm.

Treatment Approach

The Adult Partial Hospital Programs emphasize group therapy, structure, and skill building, with intensive daily treatment programming designed to reduce symptoms and meet individual treatment needs.

Each patient undergoes a thorough initial assessment to create a personalized care plan based on specific diagnoses and symptoms, aiming to support stabilization and tailored treatment goals.

Clinicians help patients build coping skills using cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). We also integrate the systems model, focusing on patient-family and patient-community relationships, as well as positive psychology to enhance strengths and well-being.

Group therapy programming aligns with our core commitment to person-focused, evidence-based care. Examples of core skills groups include:

  • Self-assessment skills
  • Behavioral activation
  • Cognitive restructuring
  • Motivation
  • Social skills
  • Mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness
  • Symptom recognition and management skills

In addition to group therapy, treatment includes medication consultations, individual therapy, case management, and aftercare planning.

We understand that mental health affects not only the individual but also the entire family, which is why our compassionate and experienced team takes a comprehensive approach to treatment and recovery, incorporating loved ones in patient care as appropriate.

To maintain treatment continuity, care is also coordinated with outpatient providers, community agencies, and primary care providers as appropriate.

Research

The Behavioral Health Partial Hospital Clinical Research Program, established in 2009, aims to enhance the understanding and treatment of mental health disorders through an integrative approach in which research and clinical practice inform each other.

The program focuses on predicting treatment responses, understanding treatment mechanisms, developing innovative interventions, and gaining insights into the structure of mental health conditions.

Patient data is gathered through a one-time clinician interview to guide personalized treatment as well as daily self-reports. Patients may consent to have their de-identified data used for research, including studies involving computerized, fMRI, or EEG tasks.

Research outcomes show that patients who participate in the Behavioral Health Partial Hospital Program experience significant symptom reduction, improved functioning, and better quality of life.

Participation in research is voluntary and does not affect care.

Admission

The Adult Partial Hospital Programs treat individuals struggling with an array of mental health symptoms. The programs are ideal for those who need more structure and intensive intervention than is available in outpatient treatment, but who do not require 24-hour care.

Please note that we do not treat active symptoms of substance and alcohol addiction. The program is voluntary, and patients must agree to abstain from using alcohol and drugs for the duration of treatment.
