Horizons – Spring 2026

A publication for friends and supporters of McLean Hospital

April 1, 2026

The spring edition of Horizons reflects meaningful milestones and new beginnings at McLean.

Last fall, we celebrated the completion of The Way Forward Campaign, an ambitious effort made possible by our generous community. We presented the prestigious McLean Award to Emeritus President and Psychiatrist in Chief Scott L. Rauch, MD, for his visionary leadership that guided McLean through a transformative era of growth.

We introduce two new leaders who will shape our next chapter. You will hear from our new President and Chief Operating Officer, Susan M. Szulewski, MD, MBA, in a thoughtful Q&A about her vision for McLean’s future. We also spotlight Maurizio Fava, MD, newly appointed chair of Mass General Brigham Psychiatry, whose leadership will strengthen collaboration and advance innovation across our field.

You’ll read the exciting news of Kristine M. Trustey’s appointment to the McLean Board of Trustees. A dedicated philanthropist and former co-chair of The Way Forward Campaign, Kris’s continued service reflects her deep commitment to McLean.

This year also marks the bittersweet 10th anniversary of the Ride for Mental Health—and more than a decade since Ride founder (and guest columnist) Mac Dorris lost his son, Eric. Mac’s reflections remind us that one person’s efforts can have a powerful impact on advancing mental health awareness.

Finally, you will read a story about a donor who continues to support McLean in gratitude for the life-changing care his late wife received decades ago—a reminder of the tremendous impact of compassionate care.

Ten Years: Riding To Remember Eric – A Reflection by Mac Dorris
We are only a few months away from the 2026 Ride for Mental Health, and we’re working hard to make this another great event—maybe the best yet. This will be the 10th anniversary of the Ride. It has become a cherished tradition for my family and a growing community of cyclists who value the opportunity to talk about and support mental health.

Helping Those Who Might Need Care in the Future

Nathaniel Landau will never forget the life-changing care his wife Leslie received at McLean Hospital.

Leslie endured reoccurring episodes of depression throughout her adult life. As time went on, these episodes became more frequent and lasted longer, and in some instances led to hospitalizations.

While her symptoms intensified, Nat and Leslie felt as though they had exhausted all treatment options, until they found McLean. Hopeful about the world-class care and innovative treatments they’d heard about, Nat and Leslie traveled from their home in Tennessee to McLean’s campus in Belmont, Massachusetts.

Leslie spent just 12 days at McLean receiving treatment, but, according to Nat, the three years that followed were some of the happiest in her life.

“We both were enormously impressed with McLean and the level of care provided by the staff. It was so superior to anything we had seen before, and I feel so fortunate that she was able to receive this support,” said Nat.

Leslie passed away in 2022, and in her memory and in gratitude for the care she received, Nat continues to support McLean. He is a proud member of the Mary Belknap Society, making annual unrestricted gifts to support the hospital’s most pressing needs. Nat has also included McLean in his estate plans, further supporting McLean’s promise of a brighter future for those who experience mental illness.

“I give to McLean because there are a lot of people out there living with mental illness. I want to keep giving what I can to help those who might need care in the future,” said Nat.
