LEARN TO RECOGNIZE DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY

Depression

Treatment for depression is one of the core practices at McLean Hospital. We recognize that depression is not a weakness or character flaw—it’s a chemical imbalance in the brain that can be treated.

People who struggles with depression often have one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Sadness, anxiousness, or a feeling of emptiness
  • A pessimistic or hopeless outlook on life
  • Feelings of guilt and worthlessness
  • Low energy levels, constant fatigue, and insomnia
  • A loss of interest in friends, family, and activities that were once enjoyable

Since there is no singular cause for depression, there is no one correct method to treat it. That’s why our clinical staff will work diligently to correctly find the unique causes of each individual’s depression and recommend the proper path to recovery.

Anxiety

While everyone worries about health, money, family, or work once in a while, if you tend to worry a lot and always expect the worst, even when there’s no reason, you may have an anxiety disorder. There are several different conditions that fall under this disorder, including:

  • Panic disorders, also known as panic attacks, are episodes of anxiety that can come at any moment, without trigger, causing sweat, chest pain, and strong or irregular heartbeats
  • Social anxiety disorder is an overwhelming feeling of worry and self-consciousness when thinking of or participating in everyday social situations, accompanied with the fear of being embarrassed or ridiculed
  • Phobias are an intense, disproportionate fear of specific objects or situations (such as spiders, flying, or crowds) which can have the power to disrupt your everyday life
  • Generalized anxiety disorder is a feeling of excessive and unrealistic worry or tension, seldom arising from any real reason or cause

Deconstructing Stigma

McLean’s international public awareness campaign highlights honest, first-person stories about the mental health challenges faced by people around the world.

Told through the eyes of its participants, Deconstructing Stigma boldly tears down the misconceptions of what those with mental illness look like.

The volunteers in this project are more than just statistics or nameless faces. They are mothers, fathers, wives, husbands, lawyers, doctors, engineers, musicians, and more. Each one has been affected by mental illness, and each one has also faced stigma.
